Why Our Lenses Are Silver: Reflection Before Absorption

Pick up a pair of our glasses and the first thing you notice is that the lenses are mirrors. That silver is not decoration and it is not a branding choice. It is a metal layer, and it is the reason the filter reflects most of the sunlight that hits it instead of swallowing it.

Two ways to stop sunlight, and we use both

There are two mainstream materials for safe solar viewing filters, and they work on completely different principles.

Material Mechanism
Black polymer Carbon particles suspended in resin. Light that enters is absorbed and turned into heat.
Aluminized polyester A thin metal coating on a film. Most of the incoming energy is reflected before it ever enters the material.

Our filter is neither one on its own. It is a black polymer substrate with an aluminium coating on it, which is why it looks like a mirror from the front and why the industry increasingly treats this combination as the better of the two. The metal turns the bulk of the sunlight away at the surface, and the black polymer absorbs what gets past it. Two independent mechanisms, stacked.

Why reflecting beats absorbing

1. Energy you reflect never has to go anywhere

A filter that works purely by absorption has to do something with the light it stops, and what it does is turn it into heat, inside a film a few hundredths of a millimetre thick, held a couple of centimetres from your eye. That is manageable for a glance. A partial phase lasts more than two hours, and people stare through these things repeatedly for the whole of it. A reflective surface sends most of that energy back out before the material has to deal with it, so the filter stays cooler and its optical properties stay where they were when it was tested.

2. Metal is broadband. Dye is not.

This is the part that actually protects your retina, and it is the reason cheap imitations are dangerous.

EN ISO 12312-2:2015 does not just ask a filter to be dark. It sets separate limits in three windows: ultraviolet from 280 to 380 nm, the visible band from 380 to 780 nm, and the near infrared from 780 to 1400 nm. Near infrared is invisible and it is the part that does thermal damage to the retina.

A pigment or dye can be formulated to look convincingly black in the visible band and still leak badly in the near infrared. That is the classic unsafe filter: it looks dark, it feels comfortable because your pupil opens up in the dimness, and the wavelength that burns goes straight through. A metal layer does not have that failure mode. It reflects across the ultraviolet, the visible and the infrared without being tuned for any of them.

3. Two mechanisms, not one variable

With absorption alone, the attenuation depends on one thing being right: the pigment loading through the full thickness of the film. Add a reflective layer and the filter has a second, independent line of defence. Neither one has to be perfect on its own.

Why the silver is not on the outside

Look closely and you will see the mirror surface is under something. That is deliberate.

Aluminium at this thickness is delicate. A fingernail, a coat pocket, a grain of sand on a beach in August, and you have a scratch. A scratch through the metal layer is not a cosmetic mark, it is a hole in a filter whose entire job is to pass roughly one part in a hundred thousand. A hole passes everything.

So the metal sits inside the laminate, protected on both faces, and what you touch is a protective layer rather than the coating itself. It is also why the instruction sheet tells the user to inspect the lenses against a bright light before every use and to throw away any pair that is scratched, punctured, creased through the lens or coming apart at the edge. That instruction is not boilerplate. It is the one thing a user can do that we cannot do for them.

The corollary for distributors: how you store and ship the glasses matters. Flat, dry, in the carton, out of the sun. Loose glasses rattling around in a bulk bag arrive scratched, and scratched stock is not stock you can sell.

Silver is not a certificate

Here is the part a supplier with something to hide will not tell you. Looking silver proves nothing. Metallized gift wrap is silver. Emergency blankets are silver. Party novelty film is silver. None of them are solar filters, and every eclipse produces a crop of counterfeits that are exactly that: shiny film in a printed paper frame, sold to people who reasonably assumed the mirror finish meant something.

What separates a real filter from a shiny one is measurement, not appearance:

  • A transmittance measurement across the full 280 to 1400 nm range, from an accredited laboratory, on the product you are actually buying
  • An EU type-examination certificate from a notified body, for EU sale, with a number you can check
  • A Declaration of Conformity naming the standard and the notified body
  • A lot number that ties the cartons in front of you to a specific batch test record

What we do about the coating

Stage Check
Incoming filter Every batch is tested in our own laboratory in China before it enters production. A batch that fails is not used.
Coating uniformity The standard limits how much the transmittance may vary between two points on the same filter. Uneven metallization fails on that alone, before anything else is considered.
Defects Pinholes, thin patches and crazing in the coating are what inspection is looking for. On a metallized film a pinhole shows as a sharp point of light against a lamp.
Finished goods Random samples from the finished run go to MTIC, an EU notified body, for testing to EN ISO 12312-2:2015.
Traceability Lot number printed on the frame, traceable back to the filter roll it was cut from.
Shelf life 3 years for the filter material, stored dry and flat.
